"The original project already establishes that the Ramadan Imsakiyah widget increased Brilio's pageviews from 49 million to 60 million, a reported 24% increase. This became the trigger to explore whether widgets could create engagement opportunities beyond Ramadan."
01. The Opportunity
The success of Brilio’s Ramadan Imsakiyah widget raised a new product question: could Brilio create other useful widgets that attract users beyond seasonal moments?
The assignment was to identify potential widget opportunities that could increase Brilio’s pageviews while creating additional opportunities for audience engagement and brand partnerships. The target audience was existing Brilio readers, as well as new users who might discover Brilio through useful, engaging content. The original project defined three broader business goals: increasing engagement, sustaining pageviews beyond Ramadan, and creating opportunities for sponsored brand placements.
02. Finding the Opportunity
Rather than starting with widget ideas, I looked for the intersection between Brilio’s existing audience interests and broader search trends.
I first reviewed Brilio’s categories through Google Analytics and ranked them based on pageviews. I then used Google Trends to identify popular categories based on search interest. The top categories from both sources were compared side by side, allowing me to identify areas where Brilio already had content strength while broader audience interest was also present.
The intersection revealed three categories with strong potential: Celebrities, Music, and Movies. From there, I explored what specific widget experiences could translate those interests into repeatable engagement opportunities. This approach followed the research process documented in the original deck: define the problem, plan the research, conduct desk research, analyze the findings, and determine the next step.
03. From Trends to Product Concepts
The research identified three areas where Brilio’s content strengths aligned with broader audience interest. I translated each opportunity into a potential widget that could provide a more interactive reason for users to engage with Brilio.
A widget helping readers discover upcoming movies, including release dates, trailers, cast information, and synopses.
Why it matters:
Movies offered a strong extension of Brilio’s entertainment content and created opportunities for users to return as new releases approached.
A celebrity-focused zodiac experience where users could select a zodiac sign and gender to discover relevant celebrity information.
Why it matters:
The concept connected two existing interests: celebrities and zodiac content into a lightweight interactive experience designed for repeat engagement.
A lyrics widget allowing users to follow along with popular songs while creating potential promotional space for musicians or record labels.
Why it matters:
Beyond engagement, the concept had the clearest potential commercial application through music promotion and branded content opportunities. The original deck specifically identifies musicians and recording labels as potential promotional partners.
04. Recommendation & Potential
The three concepts were discussed internally and received positively, but they were not developed into production features. Rather than treating the project as a feature launch, the outcome was a set of validated product opportunities ready for further consideration.
If I were to prioritize the concepts today, I would rank them differently based on the type of opportunity each creates:
Strongest content opportunity, with a natural connection to Brilio’s entertainment coverage.
Strongest content opportunity, with a natural connection to Brilio’s entertainment coverage.
Highest commercial potential, with a clearer path toward musician and recording-label partnerships.
Potential success metrics could include pageviews, CTR, and brand sponsorship interest. The original project also defined increasing pageviews and attracting brand collaborations as key business objectives.
05. Outcome
The biggest learning from this project was that product design can start before a feature exists. Instead of beginning with an interface, I learned to look for signals that could indicate where a product opportunity might exist combining audience behavior, content performance, and business objectives.
The project also reinforced the importance of timing and organizational alignment. Although the recommendations were discussed internally, they were not taken into development because other priorities took precedence. The original project similarly documented that the ideas were well received but that competing priorities affected whether they moved forward.
If I were continuing the project today, I would take the research beyond the design team and bring the opportunity to a broader group of stakeholders, particularly business and brand partnership teams. This would help determine not only whether users might engage with the widget, but whether the opportunity could create meaningful value for Brilio and potential brand partners.
